History :: 1980s

1980
"Straight the Pathway to our Goal" inspired Arrowmen of the 1980 Conclave to renew their obligations and commitments. Section Chief Joe Heideman, MAZAMA, selected Grants Pass High School with host MAZAMA. Jim Savard helped by arranging a stimulating program with black powder exhibitions; mountainmen and Indian arrowhead making; costume seminars; and the successful "Arrowshow". Special guests, Martin Mockford, National Secretary, 1959-81, as keynote speaker; and Del Loder, Area Advisor, inspired the audience with the importance of individual action and concerted effort toward the OA program.
Arrowmen were sorrowed by the death of E. Urner Goodman, Order of the Arrow Founder, March 13, 1980. The patch was a simple design, six sided blue twill with black R/E.

1981
The Conclave was held at Silver Creek Falls, hosted by COLE SNASS LAMATAI. The Section Chief was Ken Skatch, SKYLOO, and the patch was a 3" round white twill black R/E, red lettering showing the mountain and waterfall.

1982
The Conclave at Camp Baker, "Grow Today, Strive for Tomorrow was hosted by TSISQAN and Section Chief Mike Fisher, TSISQAN, presented a rectangular white twill patch with a black and red totem design with the theme.

1983
Hosted by MAKUALLA, with an Indian theme "WIHILLASOGHN WEUCHSOWAGON", the section chief was Bradley Craig, MAKUALLA, and the patch was a 3" round black twill with gold rolled edge and white letters. The design is an Indian and a campfire in red.

1984
Skyloo lodge had the honor of hosting the 1984 Conclave and they chose the location of Camp Merriwether for the event. They chose the theme “Meet the Challenge”. Bob Wade, our National Chief and guest this year renewed our purpose. The Section Chief was Marty Jones from Mazama. The patch is a large red border dome with, the 5 lodge names the location and theme.

1985
The Section Chief in 1985 was Michael Miller from Mazama Lodge. Mazama was the service lodge in 1985 at Camp McLoughlin. But a change of date and dramatic change in the weather forced them to Grants Pass High School. Special attention was placed on the BSA 75th anniversary. The honored guest was Western Region Chief Todd Brohaugh. A colorfulful 4” round patch was issued with concentric rings and the Dimond Jubilee logo in the center. 1985 also marked the year that the National OA Committee planned and conducted the first ever Philmont OA Trek.

1986
Ron Partridge, our Section Chief was elected Western Region Chief so Charles Ramey took over the Section postion. Cole Snass Lamatai held the 1986 Conclave at Camp Kilowan, a Camp Fire Girls camp. The patch is a tall oval with a black R/E with an indian face on a yellow background.

1987
“Gathered Now to Help and Serve” set the scene for the 1987 Conclave at Camp Baker with Tsisqan as host. Charles Ramey, Section Chief and Pat Patterson presented a great program. The Patch is a red and black beaver, dome shape on white twill.

1988
Mazama was host at Ka-Ne-Ta on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. We learned alot and enjoyed the company of the indians living on the reservation. The patch was rectangular, black R/E and letters with red and purple mountains.

1989
The Lewis River Campground in Yacolt, WA was chosen by host lodge Skyloo for the 1989 Conclave. The National Chief Jack Stephens was our honored guest. A 12 member delegation from Tillicum Lodge came down from Section W1b to participate in the festivities. For the first time, W1a issued two patches. Both are 3-1/4” round with five feathers hanging beneath. Regular patch has red C/E, donation patch has gold mylar C/E.
