History :: 1950s

1950
During 1948 (a busy year for Order of the Arrow growth), the Executive Board of the Portland Area Council on January 4, in accordance with National acceptance of the OA into the BSA program, gave permission for a charter to Beryl Morris, Advisor, and Nick Dodge, Acting Chief, to form an OA Lodge. A date for an Ordeal Induction was made with TSISQAN for a ceremony team and on November 18, 1950, 91 charter members assembled at Camp Millard. It was a cold, damp evening and the candidates bared their chests in the early tradition of the Ordeal — only their expectations and a new sense of brotherhood warmed them. All were impressed with the ceremony, especially a Scout named Bill Boston, who became the elected Chief of the new Lodge called HYAS CHUCK KAH SUN KLATAWA, the 442nd Lodge chartered in the Order of the Arrow. The Douglas Fir was chosen as a fitting totem set on background of Mt. Hood and the Columbia River, the '"Great River that flows to the West".

1951
TSISQAN, in November of 1951, invited representatives of the five Oregon Lodges to their annual meeting held in Sherwood Lodge at Yachats on the coast. Plans for an OA Conclave to be held in 1952 were made and Section XIA was formed.

1952
The first Conclave was hosted by MAKUALLA. Dean McCorkle, Section Chief and Oregon's and TSISQAN's first Vigil, organized an active participation from the five Lodges at the Methodist Camp at Suttle Lake. Dayton Sharpe, the area's Professional Advisor, helped arrange the facility and food for the weekend— all for $4.50 per person.

1953
The second XIA Conclave, 1953, was hosted by COLE SNASS LAMATAI at Silver Creek YMCA camp. The format was similar and Section Chief, Bob Ehrenstrom of HYAS CHUCK... directed the activities. An attractive 3-inch round cut edge white twill patch depicting the State of Oregon, in green, was issued. Arrowmen in attendance recall that Vigil Ernie Christler, TSISQAN's 2nd Vigil, along with SKYLOO's Advisor, Betyl Morris and Don Reese and Richard Whitney were also honored.

1954
In 1954 Section XIA held its Conclave at Camp McLoughlin with MAKUALLA hosting. Scotty Williams was Section Chief. Not a great deal of information could be acquired about this event.

1955
Little is known about the 1955 Conclave Except that it was held at Camp Tsilcoos.

1956
A banner year for Oregon Lodges. Les Pakulak, TSISQAN's third Vigil, presented a good program at Scouter’s Mountain hosted by HYAS CHUCK. That year TSISQAN sent a contingent to the National OA Conference in Bloomington, Indiana--25 dancers and 6 other OA brothers. The colorful dancers, under the direction of Dave Williams, took fourth place in national competition.

1957
"He who serves is Greatest" was the theme of the 1957 Conclave held at Suttle Lake; hosted by MAKUALLA. Jim Boyd served as Section Chief. Many of the Lodges made plans to adopt the new pocket flap style for their Lodge patches, changing from the rounds and odd shapes to "flaps". Bob Warner, SKYLOO Advisor, designer of the original HYAS CHUCK round, recalls the change to the new cut edge flap shape with black border.

1958
Our 7th conclave, hosted by Cascade Area Council's COLE SNASS LAMATAI Lodge, was again at Silver Creek Falls. Dick Clark, MAZAMA, was Section XIA Chief and also that year Deputy National Conference Chief for shows at the NOAC. He is now a Professional in Oregon Trail Council. A dark blue arrowhead patch with gold accent and FDL was used.

1959
Our selected site for the 1959 Conclave returned us to the grandeur of the Lake of the Woods in the shadow of Mt. McLoughlin. MAZAMA hosted the Conclave under the leadership of Section Chief Bill Henderson, TSISQAN. The Conclave patch was the same design as 1958.
